occipital bone

occipital bone (ok-sip-i-t'l) n. a saucer-shaped bone of the skull that forms the back and part of the base of the cranium. At the base of the occipital are two condyles that articulate with the first (atlas) vertebra of the backbone. Between the condyles is the foramen magnum.
