image (im-ij) n. 1. (in physiology) an optical reproduction of an object formed on the retina when light is refracted through the eye.
2. (in radiology) a representation of the structure of an organ, tissue, etc., produced by radiography and used by physicians in diagnosis and in monitoring the effects of treatment. See

i. intensifier an electronic device that provides a TV image from an X-ray source. It amplifies the signal from the original image, giving a brighter picture, so that the radiation dose can be reduced.
