ectopic pregnancy
ectopic pregnancy (extrauterine pregnancy) n. the implantation of a fertilized egg cell at a site outside the uterus. The most common type of ectopic pregnancy occurs in Fallopian tubes that become blocked or inflamed (
tubal pregnancy). The growth of the fetus may cause the tube to rupture and bleed. Treatment is by laparoscopic surgery; medical treatment, which preserves fertility, may be possible in some cases. Medical name:
eccyesis.
