ectopic pregnancy

ectopic pregnancy (extrauterine pregnancy) n. the implantation of a fertilized egg cell at a site outside the uterus. The most common type of ectopic pregnancy occurs in Fallopian tubes that become blocked or inflamed (tubal pregnancy). The growth of the fetus may cause the tube to rupture and bleed. Treatment is by laparoscopic surgery; medical treatment, which preserves fertility, may be possible in some cases. Medical name: eccyesis.
