calorie (kal-er-i) n. a unit of heat equal to the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water from 14.5°C to 15.5°C (the 15° calorie). One
Calorie (
kilocalorie or
kilogram calorie) is equal to 1000 calories; this unit is used to indicate the energy value of foods. Both these units have now largely been replaced by the joule and kilojoule respectively (1 calorie=4.1855 joules).
