ontogeny The developmental course of an organism from the fertilized egg through to maturity. It has been suggested that “ontogeny recapitulates
phylogeny”, i.e. the stages of development, especially of the embryo, reflect the evolutionary history of the organism. This idea is now discredited. See
recapitulation.
