genus
genus (pl. genera) A category used in the
classification of organisms that consists of a number of similar or closely related species. The common name of an organism (especially a plant) is sometimes similar or identical to that of the genus, e.g.
Lilium (lily),
Crocus,
Antirrhinum. Similar genera are grouped into families. See also
binomial nomenclature.
