Calvin, Melvin
Calvin, Melvin (1911–97) US biochemist. After World War II, at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Berkeley, he investigated the dark reactions of
photosynthesis. Using radioactive carbon-14 to label carbon dioxide he discovered the
Calvin cycle, for which he was awarded the 1961 Nobel Prize for chemistry.

He covered the 2.2-mile course in 11 minutes 36.1 seconds. Calvin Dallas, Milwaukee Washington: A 1970 graduate who lettered in cross country at Wisconsin in 1971, '72 and '73. Represented the Virgin Islands in the marathon in the 1988 and '92 Olympics. Jim Johnson, Milwaukee North: A versatile athlete who led the Blue Devils to the cross country state title in 1960 as a senior. During the spring of 1961 he set a conference record in the 880-yard run of 1:59.2. Melvin Kinlow, Milwaukee Marshall: Won the first City Conference 2-mile race in 1967 and won the mile as senior in '68. Also earned a conference cross country title as a senior. Carl McMurray, Milwaukee Lincoln: Led the Comets to their second straight small school cross country title by winning the individual title in 11:34.1 over the 2.3-mile course. As a junior he finished third at state. Jim Smith, Milwaukee North: Finished second in the City Conference and sixth in the state in cross country as a senior in 1962. Al Stewart, Milwaukee South: Better known as an 800-meter runner, but helped the Cardinals win three straight cross country conference titles. Finished sixth in the state as a senior. Graduated in 1986. Ron Stinson, Milwaukee Lincoln: As a senior finished second in the mile at the large school state meet in 1964. Took third at the small school state cross country meet in the fall of 1963. Richard Stotts, Milwaukee Lincoln: Won the 1960 small school cross country title as a senior. Placed seventh at the meet as a junior.
