Calvin, Melvin (1911–97) US biochemist. After World War II, at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Berkeley, he investigated the dark reactions of photosynthesis. Using radioactive carbon-14 to label carbon dioxide he discovered the Calvin cycle, for which he was awarded the 1961 Nobel Prize for chemistry.

Al Stewart, Milwaukee South: Better known as an 800-meter runner, but helped the Cardinals win three straight cross country conference titles. Finished sixth in the state as a senior. Graduated in 1986. Ron Stinson, Milwaukee Lincoln: As a senior finished second in the mile at the large school state meet in 1964. Took third at the small school state cross country meet in the fall of 1963. Richard Stotts, Milwaukee Lincoln: Won the 1960 small school cross country title as a senior. Placed seventh at the meet as a junior.
