Weaver, Harriet Shaw

Weaver, Harriet Shaw (1876–1961), editor, publisher and benefactor, born in Cheshire. As editor of the Egoist, she saw Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man through serial publication (1914–15); when Joyce could find no British publisher for the book, Weaver brought it out under the imprint of the Egoist Press, which also published work by T. S. Eliot, R. Aldington, H. D., ( Hilda Doolittle), Marianne Moore, and others. Under her editorship the journal published work by Pound, Eliot (from 1917 her assistant editor), W. Lewis, W. C. Williams, and others, as well as early instalments of Ulysses. It ceased publication in December 1919 and the press closed in 1923. Weaver continued her long-standing financial support of Joyce and became literary executor of his estate.
