Verne, Jules (1828–1905), French novelist, author of a long series of books combining adventure and popular science. Among his most successful stories are:
Voyage au centre de la terre (1864,
Journey to the Centre of the Earth, 1871);
Vingt mille lieues sous les mers (1870,
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, 1872), the adventures of Captain Nemo and his crew aboard the submarine
Nautilus; and
Le Tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours (1873,
Around the World in Eighty Days), recounting the travels of the Englishman Phileas Fogg and his valet, Passepartout.
