Tyrannick Love, or The Royal Martyr, a heroic play by
Dryden (1669).
Based on the legend of the martyrdom of St Catharine by the Roman emperor Maximin, it contains some of Dryden's most extravagant heroic verse. It was ridiculed in
The Rehearsal, and by
Shadwell. Dryden himself satirizes its excesses in
MacFlecknoe.
