Bananas. Her novels, which have been variously described as neo-
Gothic and
magic realist, are written in a powerful poetic prose. They include
Hotel de Dream (1976),
The Bad Sister (1978),
Wild Nights (1979),
Alice Fell (1980),
Woman Beware Woman (1983),
The House of Hospitalities (1987),
A Wedding of Curiosity (1988),
Sisters and Strangers: A Moral Tale (1990),
Faustine (1992), and
Tess (1993).
Pemberley (1993), her sequel to Jane Austen's
Pride and Prejudice, was followed by a continuation,
An Unequal Marriage (1994).
Strangers (1998) is a fictionalized autobiographical novel.
