Strafford, a tragedy in blank verse by R.
Browning, published 1837. It was written at the instigation of
Macready, who produced it at Covent Garden on the day of publication, with himself in the title role.
The action deals loosely with the events surrounding the impeachment of Strafford; Browning's interest lies in the interplay of love and loyalty between Strafford and the three other main characters: King Charles I, John Pym, and Lady Carlisle.
