Siege of Rhodes, The, one of the earliest attempts at English opera, by D'Avenant, performed 1656.

Dramatic performances having been suppressed by the Commonwealth government, D'Avenant obtained permission in 1656 to produce at Rutland House an ‘Entertainment after the manner of the ancients’; this was accompanied by vocal and instrumental music, composed by Henry Lawes. Immediately after this prologue was given The Siege of Rhodes (at first in one, but in 1662 in two parts), a heroic play, the ‘story sung in recitative music’, which was composed by Dr Charles Coleman and George Hudson. The play deals with the siege of Rhodes by Solyman the Magnificent, and the devotion by which Ianthe, wife of the Sicilian Duke Alphonso, saves her husband and the defenders of the island.
