Shorthouse, Joseph Henry (1834–1903), is remembered as the author of the historical novel
John Inglesant (1881), an evocation of 17th-cent. religious intrigue and faith. Inglesant becomes a tool of the Jesuit faction, joins the court of Charles I, and after the king's death visits Italy to seek vengeance for his brother's murder; the most interesting part of the book is an account of N.
Ferrar's religious community at
Little Gidding; the novel bears witness to the religious and historical interests revived by the
Oxford Movement and the
Pre-Raphaelites.
