Cromwell, after the Restoration as a member of the Cabal and chancellor. After his dismissal he was leader of the opposition, and a supporter of Monmouth. He was satirized as Achitophel in Dryden's
Absalom and Achitophel, by Otway in
Venice Preserv'd, and by many others.
