Sartre, Jean-Paul (1905–80), French philosopher, novelist, playwright, literary critic, and political activist. His novel
La Nausée (1938;
Nausea, 1949) was one of the earliest manifestations of
existentialism, a movement in which Sartre figured prominently, and which is also expounded in his plays
Les Mouches (1943;
The Flies, 1947) and
Huis Clos, (1945;
In Camera, 1946) and in his philosophical writings (
L'Être et le néant, 1943,
Being and Nothingness, 1956).
