‘Ruines of Time, The’, a poem by
Spenser, included in the
Complaints published in 1591. It is an allegorical elegy on the death of Sir P.
Sidney (see
Astrophel). The poet passes to a lament on the decline of patronage and neglect of literature, with allusion to his own case. It is dedicated to the countess of
Pembroke, Sidney's sister.
