Roberts, Michael William Edward (1902–48), poet, critic, editor, and teacher of mathematics, whose anthologies New Signatures (1932) and New Country (1933), containing work by Auden, Day-Lewis, Empson, Spender, and others established him, in T. S. Eliot's phrase, as ‘expositor and interpreter of the poetry of his generation’. The Recovery of the West (1941) is a study of the ills of Western civilization and The Estate of Man (1951) shows him as a pioneer ecologist. He also edited the influential Faber Book of Modern Verse (1936).
