Ricardo, David (1772–1823), English economist, who made a fortune on the London stock exchange and then, under the influence of Adam
Smith, devoted himself to the study of political economy. James
Mill became a close friend and encouraged him in the composition and publication of his chief work,
On the Principles of Political Economy and Taxation (1817), in which he set forward his views on prices, wages, and profits, and his theory of rent. He became MP for Pontarlington in 1819. His personal and social interests and sympathies appear to have been narrow, and in many ways he represents the archetypal ‘Dryasdust’ economist, concerned only with facts and statistics, of Carlyle's diatribes.
