Revenger's Tragedy, The

Revenger's Tragedy, The, a tragedy published anonymously in 1607, and from 1656 ascribed to Tourneur; some scholars attribute the play to Middleton, though its authorship is still disputed.

It deals with the revenge of Vendice (or Vindice) for the murder of his betrothed lady by the licentious duke, and for the attempt of the duke's son, Lussurioso, to seduce Vendice's sister, the chaste Castiza. The play is marked by a tragic intensity of feeling, a powerfully satiric wit, and passages of great poetic richness. (See also revenge tragedy.)
