Religio Medici, by Sir T. Browne, first published in an unauthorized edition 1642, reprinted 1643 with corrections, revisions, and additions.

The work is divided into two parts, relating broadly to God and to man. The first treats of matters of faith, the hostilities among rival sects and religions, and man as microcosm. In the second part, he expresses love for all sorts and conditions of men, English or foreign, rich or poor, learned or ignorant, friend or foe, good or bad. While based on biblical teaching, the arguments are reinforced and widened with citations of classical philosophers, historians, and poets.
