Written in defence of Anglicanism against Deist, Catholic, and Dissenting arguments,
Religio Laici combines an exalted recognition of religious sublimity with a defence of a ‘layman's’ reasonable and straightforward religious attitudes. Its opening lines, beginning ‘Dim as the borrow'd Beams of Moon and Stars’, are among the finest Dryden wrote.
