Relapse, The, or Virtue in Danger, the highly successful first play of Vanbrugh, produced 1696.

It is an avowed continuation of Love's Last Shift by C. Cibber. Loveless, a reformed libertine living happily in the country with his wife Amanda, is obliged to go with her to London where he suffers a relapse under the temptation of Berinthia, an unscrupulous young widow. Amanda, though bitterly resenting her husband's faithlessness, resists the overtures of Worthy, and remains firm in her virtue.

The subplot concerns Sir Novelty Fashion, now Lord Foppington, and his attempts to marry the heiress Miss Hoyden, daughter of Sir Tunbelly Clumsy, a country squire. He is forestalled by his younger brother, Fashion, who disguises himself and marries Hoyden in his place.

The play was adapted by Sheridan as A Trip to Scarborough.
