Ransome, Arthur Michell (1884–1967), journalist and author. He went to Russia in 1913 to learn the language, covered the revolution at first hand for the Daily News, and published a collection of Russian legends and fairy stories, Old Peter's Russian Tales (1916). He is best remembered for his classic sequence of novels for children, which reflect his keen interest in sailing, fishing, and the countryside: beginning with Swallows and Amazons (1930) and ending with Great Northern? (1947), it describes the adventures of the Walker (Swallow) and Blackett (Amazon) families, and various of their friends, in the Lake District, the Norfolk Broads, and other vividly drawn locations.
