Provok'd Husband, The, or a Journey to London, a comedy by
Vanbrugh, finished by C.
Cibber, produced 1728.
The ‘provok'd husband’ is Lord Townly, who, driven to desperation by the extravagance of his wife, decides to separate from her and to make his reasons public. The sentence (according to Cibber's ending) brings Lady Townly to her senses, and a reconciliation is promoted by Manly, Lord Townly's sensible friend and the successful suitor of Lady Grace, Lord Townly's exemplary sister.
