Popple, William (1701–64), dramatist and theatre critic, wrote two comedies, The Lady's Revenge (1734) and The Double Deceit: or A Cure for Jealousy (1735), in which two young men, intended to marry two heiresses, conspire to avoid their fate by exchanging places with their valets. The ladies, apprised of the trick, exchange places with their maids, the pseudo-valets fall in love with the pseudo-maids, and all ends well.
