Plain Speaker, The, a volume of essays by Hazlitt, published in 1826, the last such collection to appear before his death. The title fittingly captures his gift for forthright assertion and invective. The collection includes several of his finest pieces, such as ‘On Dreams’ and ‘On the Pleasures of Hating’, which concludes with Hazlitt's self-description as ‘the dupe of friendship, and the fool of love’.
