Nōh plays, form of traditional, ceremonial, or ritualistic drama peculiar to Japan, symbolical and spiritual in character. It was evolved from religious rites of Shinto worship, was perfected in the 15th cent., and flourished during the Tokugawa period (1652–1868). Both
Pound and
Yeats were much influenced by the ritual, simplicity, and stylization of the Noh theatre, and it has had a considerable impact on 20th-cent. European drama.
