Naipaul, Shiva (1945–85), novelist and travel writer, born in Trinidad, where his first novel, Fireflies, (1970) was set, as was The Chip-Chip Gatherers (1973), a sombre family drama in which Wilbert eventually inherits the small estate, business, and problems of his successful but mean father, Egbert. North of South (1978) is an account of a journey through Africa. Black and White (1980) investigates the mass suicide in Guyana instigated by American religious fanatic Jim Jones, and A Hot Country (1983) is a novel set in a fictitious South American state, Cuyama, which much resembles Guyana. Beyond the Dragon's Mouth (1984) is a collection of fictional and travel pieces, and An Unfinished Journey (1986) comprises travel writing and personal memoir, including an essay on his relationship with V. S. Naipaul, ‘My Brother and I’.
