‘Mother Hubberds Tale’, or ‘Prosopopoia’, a satire in rhymed couplets, by
Spenser, included in the volume of
Complaints published in 1591. The ape and the fox, ‘disliking of their evill | And hard estate’, determine to seek their fortunes abroad, and assume the disguises first of an old soldier and his dog, then of a parish priest and his clerk, then of a courtier and his groom; their knaveries in these characters are recounted. The poem is a satire on the abuses of the church and the evils of the court.
