Mother Goose, a traditional name for a narrator of nursery rhymes and fairy stories. She came into the English language from the frontispiece of Perrault's tales: the name was taken up by children's publisher John Newbery and others in various collections of rhymes and tales, and she became a well-known figure of folklore in both Britain and North America.
