Morrell, Lady Ottoline (1873–1938), patron of the arts and hostess. From 1908 she entertained a wide circle of political and literary celebrities at her Thursday evening gatherings at 44 Bedford Square, and then at Garsington Manor, Oxfordshire (1915–27). Her friends and guests included Asquith, H.
James, L.
Strachey, B.
Russell, V.
Woolf, T. S.
Eliot,
Yeats, D. H.
Lawrence, and A.
Huxley. She appeared as a character in several works of fiction by her protégés, most memorably in Lawrence's
Women in Love and Huxley's
Crome Yellow. Both portraits caused considerable offence. Her
Memoirs, edited by Robert Gathorne-Hardy, appeared in 2 volumes in 1963 and 1974.
