Molesworth, Robert, first Viscount (1656–1725), Dublin-born diplomatist and political writer. His An Account of Denmark as It Was in the Year 1692 (1694), extolling the liberty of post-revolution England in comparison with political and clerical ‘tyranny’ in Denmark, caused a diplomatic storm. Swift admired him as an Irish patriot and dedicated to him the fifth of The Drapier's Letters. As leading spokesman for the ‘Old Whigs’ or ‘Commonwealth Men’, Molesworth was the common patron of the different groups of Shaftesbury's followers.
