Miller, Hugh (1802–56), born in Cromarty, began to write poetry while working as a stone-mason, but made a more lasting mark as a journalist and self-educated palaeontologist. His
The Old Red Sandstone, or New Walks in an Old Field (1841), a vivid account of his sense of excitement and discovery when, as a young man, he learned to look for fossils in the sandstone quarries, became a Victorian classic. His other works include his autobiographical
My Schools and Schoolmasters (1854); and
The Footprints of the Creator (1849), an attack on R.
Chambers's The Vestiges of Creation, in which Miller expounded his own God-centred and pre-Darwinian views of evolution.
