Manley, Mrs (Mary?) Delarivière

Manley, Mrs (Mary?) Delarivière (1663–1724), had a colourful life, which included a bigamous marriage with her cousin John Manley, and some years as mistress of the warden of the Fleet Prison, John Tilly. She published several novels and memoirs, including The New Atalantis (1709), a roman à clef (published with a Key to its characters) in which she attacked various Whigs and people of note. She also wrote several plays. In 1711 she succeeded Swift as editor of the Examiner.
