London, a poem by Dr
Johnson, published anonymously 1738, in imitation of the Third Satire of
Juvenal. Thales (perhaps
Savage), disgusted with London, and about to leave for Wales, reflects on London's vices and affectations, and on the oppression of the poor—‘All crimes are safe, but hated poverty.’ Johnson attacks Sir R.
Walpole's administration; the poem's success was in part political.
