Livingstone, David (1813–73), Scottish missionary and explorer, embarked for the Cape of Good Hope in 1840. He travelled across more than one-third of the African continent gathering important information about the country. His many geographical discoveries included Lake Ngami, Lake Nyasa, and the Victoria Falls. His expeditions are described in Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa (1857) and Narrative of an Expedition to the Zambesi and its Tributaries and the Discovery of the Lakes of Shirwa and Nyassa (1865, in collaboration with his brother Charles). During his final expedition, to discover the sources of the Nile, he was rescued, almost dying, by H. M. Stanley in Ujiji in 1871; he resumed his explorations but never recovered his health. His Last Journals appeared posthumously in 1874.
