Lily, William (c.1468–1522), friend of Colet and Sir T. More, grandfather of J. Lyly, and a leader of the revival of Greek studies in England. He was made a high master of St Paul's School, and was partly responsible for Lily's Grammar, which was long familiar to English schoolboys; cf. the Latin lesson in The Merry Wives of Windsor, iv. i.
