Letter to the Sheriffs of Bristol, A

Letter to the Sheriffs of Bristol, A, by E. Burke, published 1777.

The American war had at this time followed its disastrous course for two years. In this letter Burke protests against Parliament's treatment of the rebels, and argues that the scheme of taxing America is incompatible with his concept of the supremacy of Parliament and an appropriate imperial policy. Burke consequently voted for the pacification of 1766, and even for the surrender of the right of taxation.
