Lennox, Charlotte, née Ramsay (?1729–1804), novelist, poet, and essayist, spent some of her childhood in New York Province. Her novel
The Female Quixote (1752), was praised by H.
Fielding. Her other novels include the
Life of Harriot Stuart (1750) and
Henrietta (1758), which was dramatized as
The Sisters (perf. 1769), with an epilogue by
Goldsmith. She was skilled in discerning fleeting moments of emotion, and may be grouped with practitioners of the novel of
sentiment. Dr
Johnson cited her under ‘Talent’ in his
Dictionary. Her collection and translation of the sources of Shakespeare's plays appeared as
Shakespear Illustrated (1752–3). She also translated many works from the French.
