Lehmann, Rosamond Nina (1901–90), novelist, sister of John
Lehmann, born in Buckinghamshire and educated at Cambridge, achieved a
succès de scandale with her first novel,
Dusty Answer (1927), which describes the awakening into womanhood of 18-year-old Judith Earle.
A Note in Music (1930), also created a stir with its frank treatment of homo-sexuality.
Invitation to the Waltz (1932) describes the impact on innocent 17-year-old Olivia Curtis of her first dance; its sequel,
The Weather in the Streets (1936), shocked some readers by taking Olivia through a failed marriage, an adulterous love affair, and an abortion.
The Ballad and the Source (1944) is a child's-eye view of adult passion.
The Echoing Grove (1953), a novel about the relationship of two sisters, was followed by
The Swan in the Evening: Fragments of an Inner Life (1967), a short autobiographical work, and
A Sea-Grape Tree (1976).
The new wave of
feminist criticism inspired many reprints of Rosamond Lehmann's novels in the 1980s.
