Le Carré, John, pseudonym of David John Moore Cornwell (1931– ), whose first novel, Call for the Dead (1961), introduced the mild-mannered mastermind and secret agent George Smiley, who appears in many of his later books. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1963), a cold-war thriller inspired by the Berlin Wall, brought Le Carré immediate fame. Its successors, The Looking Glass War (1965), A Small Town in Germany (1968), Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1974), The Honourable Schoolboy (1977), and Smiley's People (1980), confirmed his reputation as a story-teller who mixes grim and realistic detail with Byzantine elaboration of plot. The Little Drummer Girl (1983) was followed by A Perfect Spy (1986), The Russia House (1989), The Secret Pilgrim (1992), The Night Manager (1993), and Our Game (1995), set in the aftermath of the breakup of the Soviet Union. Recent novels include Single & Single (1999) and The Constant Gardener (2001).
