Index Expurgatorius, strictly, an authoritative specification of the passages to be expunged or altered in works otherwise permitted to be read by Roman Catholics. The term is frequently used in England to cover the ‘Index Librorum Prohibitorum’, or list of forbidden books (not authors, as sometimes thought). The ‘Index Expurgatorius’ and the ‘Index Librorum Prohibitorum’ were abrogated in 1966.
