Hope, Thomas (?1770–1831), author of the once popular novel Anastasius (1819), at first attributed to Lord Byron. It is the story of a brave but unscrupulous Greek who, in the 18th cent., travels in the Middle East and becomes involved in a variety of escapades. It is possible that the story influenced the later cantos of Don Juan.
