Hewlett, Maurice Henry (1861–1923), novelist, poet, and essayist, became known for his romantic novel of the Middle Ages, The Forest Lovers (1898), which was followed by other historical novels and various volumes of poetry including The Song of the Plow (1916), a long poem which recounts the history of the ‘governed race’ in England and particularly of Hodge, the agricultural labourer, from the Norman conquest.
