Heller, Joseph (1923–99), novelist born in New York, served as a bombardier in the air force during the Second World War, an experience which resurfaced in his first novel,
Catch-22 (1961), which brought him instant fame. His second novel,
Something Happened (1974), is the domestic tragi-comedy of a middle-aged New York executive, and
Good as Gold (1979) a surreal and comic satire about Jewish New York and Washington politics. After
God Knows (1984) came
Picture This (1988) and
Closing Time (1994), a sequel to
Catch-22.
