Set in West Africa, ‘the white man's grave’, during the Second World War, the novel vividly evokes an area of ‘Greeneland’ characterized by intense heat, vultures, cockroaches, rats, heavy drinking, corruption, and a painful struggle to maintain faith, in a hostile environment, with concepts of justice and religion.
