Hayley, William

Hayley, William (1745–1820), a prolific poet, whose most ambitious works, The Triumphs of Temper (1781) and The Triumphs of Music (1804), were ridiculed by Byron. In 1805 his Ballads on…Animals was illustrated by his protégé Blake. He published a life of his friend Cowper (1803) and was offered the laureateship in 1790, but declined it.
