Guardian,
1. a periodical started by Steele in March 1713. It professed to abstain from political questions, and Addison contributed 51 papers to it. It included also among its contributors Berkeley, Pope, and Gay. But Steele soon launched into political controversy and owing to some disagreement with Tonson, the publisher, The Guardian came to an abrupt end in Oct. 1713 and was succeeded by the Englishman;

2. a national daily paper originally published as the Manchester Guardian.
