Grub Street, London, according to Dr Johnson was ‘originally the name of a street near Moorfields in London, much inhabited by writers of small histories, dictionaries, and temporary poems, whence any mean production is called grubstreet’ (Dictionary). The name of the street was changed in the 19th cent. to Milton Street (Cripplegate). ‘Grub Street’ is current in modern usage as an epithet meaning ‘of the nature of literary hack-work’.
